1. Potential Contribution

  • For Ophthalmologists in the field of cataract, glaucoma, corneal, diabetic & childhood  blindness
  • For Ophthalmic Nursing
  • For Mid level Eye care personnel

2. Courses offered at COAVS

  • Four  years B.Sc. (Hon.)Vision Sciences (Orthoptics/ Optometry/ Ophthalmic Technology)
  • Three  years B.Sc. Vision Sciences (Refractionist)
  • One year Ophthalmic Technician training course

3. The purpose of these programme

  • The purpose of these programmes is to impart training to ophthalmologists in the field of cataract, paediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, corneal & diabetes related blindness & to produce Ophthalmic technicians, Refractionists, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Ophthalmic technologists & Ophthalmic Nurses. The awardees of B.Sc. (Hon) degree in Vision Sciences, B.Sc. Vision Sciences (Refractionist), or the holders of the Diploma of Ophthalmic Technician or Ophthalmic Nursing, however, are not allowed to prescribe any treatment for medical eye disease or perform any eye surgery. They will not be labeled as doctors, but will use the title of Ophthalmic Technician, Refractionist, Optometrist, Orthoptist or Ophthalmic Technologist as per the awarded Diploma/Degree. They will not be allowed to do independent practice but will assist the Ophthalmologist as a member of Ophthalmic Team headed by the Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist).

4. Objectives of the Programme

  • King Edward Medical University has launched B.Sc & B.Sc (Hons) Programmes (Courses) for heath care technologists in different fields to improve the health care services by providing support and assistance of health Care Technologists to the Medical Experts (Specialists);
    These technologists not being a medical specialist will not be allowed to practice art of medicine independently in a way to prescribe treatment. However, At the end of successful completion of these Programmes, the future technologist is expected to attain enough knowledge and technical skills to perform their desired function so as to assist the Ophthalmologist e.g. the optometrist can prescribe glasses & contact lens, Orthoptist can diagnose cases with squint& suggest treatment etc.
    The Educational Programme will be aimed to produce a driven professional and a good human being. To do this the Programme Goals will address the development of General Competencies and Subject Specified Competencies.

5. General Competencies

  • Ideology and Faith, respectful and sympathetic, good morals and honest, team worker, well oriented, having spoken and written Communication Skills, Computers and Information Technology. (The attainment of these Competencies will be arranged in Curricular, Co-curricular and Extra Curricular activities).

6. Subject Specified Competencies

  • Educational objectives (attainments) are arranged in all three domains of learning, i.e., Cognitive Domain (Knowledge), Psychomotor Domain (Technical Skills), and Attitudes. These attainments are stated in all modules of learning in a way that their attainment level could be measured in terms of assessments.

7. Duration

  • Duration of course will be four (4) years for B.Sc. (Hon) and
    three (3) years for B.Sc. (refractionist)

8. Semesters & Credit Hour System

  • (King Edward Medical University Regulations on Semester Studies)
  • Each Semester will be of 18 weeks. 16 weeks for instructions, one week for assessments and one week for reporting the results of assessment. In case holidays fall within the Semester, duration of the Semester will be prolonged
  • Each Semester will be of fifteen (15) credit hours
  • Each year will be of thirty (30) credit hours
  • The whole programme of four years will be of 120 credit hours
  • 16 hours of Instructions (Class work) will be equal to one (1) credit hour
  • 24 hours of practical and Laboratory work will be equal to one
    (1) credit hour

9. Admission Criteria

  • F.Sc. Pre Medical
  • Age 18 to 23 years

10. Distribution of Seats

  • Number of seats (Open Merit)
    16 in B.Sc. (Hon) Vision Sciences (Optometry / Orthoptics/ Ophthalmic Technology)
    16 in B.Sc. Vision Sciences (Refractionist
  • Two seats shall be reserved for each of the four provinces, Northern areas & FATA, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir
  • 4 seats for foreign students are also reserved. These students shall apply through Economics Affairs Division (EAD) of the Federal Government.

11. Migration

  • When similar courses will be run in more Universities or Institutes within Punjab, credit will be given for assessments and Migrations will be allowed on the basis such that teacher/student ratios are not disturbed.

12. Expulsion From the course

  • On basis of wrong certificates / qualifications
  • Failure in passing Part-I in two successive attempts (availed / un-availed)
  • On Moral and Ethical grounds.

13. Credit of Any Previous Education, Training, Experience

  • As recommended by the Board of Studies on programme to programme basis and candidate to candidate basis.

14. Academic Blocks

  • Two Semesters in every year. Each Semester of 20 weeks
